The open subs are developed with the goal of transporting divers, sensors and equipment, in a safe and comfortable manner. There are attachment points for thermal suits, an abundant power supply and a navigation system.

The open sub can be safely operated from underwater over long distances and for extended periods of time, surfacing only when the operations require it. Because of this there is no need for a mother-ship. Its range allows teams to cover multiple areas in a single trip, enabling quick routine inspections.

A closed loop trimming system can adjust buoyancy to positive or negative, giving the option of flexible cargo weight. For example, bringing equipment to the sea-floor or taking soil samples back to surface. Also it gives the option to park and leave the vehicle on the sea-floor.

Propulsion is achieved with two electric rim-drive thrusters. Steering is done by two rudders and two front fins. Two additional thrusters, mounted vertically and horizontally in the bow help in situations with a high underwater current.

On-board air tanks allow divers to switch from on-board gas to self-contained breathing apparatus. Due to the open superstructure, safely leaving the vehicle is always possible.

The large power supply allows for long scanning expeditions both above and underwater. Divers can operate the instrumentation from waterproof consoles mounted in the compartments.
